Backbends, a.k.a “heart openers”, stimulates the central nervous system, boosts the immune system, helps correct bad posture by realigning the spine and can relieve back pain if practiced mindfully.

In this workshop, Jessica will share with you a sequence that will be nourishing, challenging and uplifting. The workshop will lead you through various different backbends building the practice as we warm the spine. The deeper instruction will give you a better understand of your spine and aid your personal practise and development.

In a world where we are supposedly so connected people can feel so alone and alienated. We are surrounded by technology and screens rule our lives. We have relationships through our phones including with ourselves. Modern technology blurs our vision on what is real. 

This class is about  bringing us back to ourselves, back to source, to enable us to see more clearly. The flow will be a softish vinyasa style practice that will explore the body and breath in all sorts of shapes. Moving expansively and dynamically we will shake out stale and stagnant energy. The practice will have a strong focus on the breath, meditation and being in a state of flow.

HIP MOBILITY  

The activities and stresses of our daily lives can often lead to tight & reduced range of motion in our hips. The ‘hip joint’ is a ball-and-socket joint, which means that it’s designed to have a big range of motion (like the shoulder joint). If our joints are designed this way then it is for a reason - because we need it to keep going through life and age in a gracious way. 

In this workshop we will work on stabilising and increasing mobility in all of the movements of the hips, including the IT bands, glutes, psoas, hamstrings and quads. We’ll start the workshop with some yin poses to soften and surrender and then continue with a heated vinyasa practice focusing on stabilising and mobilising the hips.

INVERSIONS & HANDSTAND DRILLS

This workshop is ideal for those that want to build confidence upside down. Inversions can be immensely empowering but also a little scary and frustrating. It takes practice and patience. Coming together in a group is a really fun way to play with these harder poses and to build confidence. 

The first part of the workshop we’ll focus on tripod headstand and transitions around this asana. Building on from this we will work on handstand drills to strengthen the wrists, build confidence upside down, understand the mechanics better and to learn drills for self practice.  

This workshop is open to all levels but some experience in yoga is needed. Do not worry if you have not mastered arm balances yes.

Arm balances can be immensely empowering but also very frustrating. We aren’t all designed the same so it can often take a little experimenting with different techniques to find the best way into an arm balance. The key is to build the correct muscle memory and to continuously work on this in your practice. A lot of arm balances involve the body balancing on Chaturanga arms, and this is where the workshop will start.

Arm balances are challenging postures that teach us how to connect to our inner strengthen with a sense of playfulness. This workshop will help you master your ability to transition into forearm stand (Pincha Mayurasana) and its variations with ease and confidence. 

The first part of the workshop will include a fun, sweaty and invigorating vinyasa practice, to wake up the core, open shoulders and help find balance. The second half of the workshop will focus on technique, drills and transitions.

CHARITY YOGA CLASS

Many of you may have heard the terrible news of our great friend Laurence Grant who sadly passed away on Tuesday 17th October. I have always believed that you must use what you have in order help others. I am therefore offering a one hour vinyasa yoga class in Clapham Junction in memory of Laurence, for those who knew him and those that didn't. We shall bring in the new year together and remember the last. Laurence did some great work setting the foundations for a mental health charity in Hong Kong. All donations to this will go to a similar Mental Health charity MIND - The Mental Health Charity, which is a fantastic charity who provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness, and promote understanding.
